OS updates are an important facet of any mobile device. Manufacturers keep the device updated and in sync so as to give their users the best experience possible. However when it comes to Android, we often see manufacturers shying away from sending out updates due to incompatibility and the sheer lack of interest in some cases. But with newer hardware making its way to smartphones, manufacturers can mark incompatibility from the list of reasons to not update a smartphone. And that’s exactly what we’re seeing since the past few months as manufacturers like Motorola got into the updating mix by announcing a Jelly Bean update roll out list for its devices. And today the company has just updated its last known Android 2.3 flagships to Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. The Verizon Droid Razr and the Droid Razr Maxx just received the said update. Along with Motorola’s two vintage droids, the European version of the HTC One S is also getting the Jelly Bean update. The key difference between the two updates is that the One S is getting Android 4.1.1 while the two Droid Razrs are getting Android 4.1.2. Users of the One S are recommended to be on an unlimited data connection or Wi-Fi as the update is said to weigh a heavy 612MB, and that’s mainly due to the Sense 4+ UI making its way with the update. This should make the Snapdragon S4 running smartphone pretty smooth as the overall frame rate with JB has been upped to 60fps thanks to Project Butter.
The Droid Razr and the Razr Maxx were always in tow for the update, but we figured Motorola would update its entire 2012 lineup first before updating older devices. Even the likes of the Atrix 4G, the Atrix 2 are eligible for the update. The Atrix HD received the Jelly Bean update this month and so did Verizon’s Droid Razr HD and Razr Maxx HD. These updates will certainly make Motorola smartphones more attractive and people can finally instill faith in the company, which quite frankly isn’t synonymous with timely updates. As for HTC’s offerings, we’ve been waiting a while to know about the Jelly Bean update for its One Series of smartphones. HTC has already made it clear that there will be no Jelly Bean for its mid-ranged offering, the One V, blaming the insufficient RAM on the smartphone (512MB). It’s not known when the rest of the variants of the HTC One S will get the update, and it can be a while as HTC has a slightly downgraded version of the device selling in Asian markets with the Snapdragon S3 chipset instead of the S4. The HTC One X has already received the Jelly Bean update and users are quite satisfied with it.
For now, European HTC One S smartphones and Verizon Droid Razr and Razr Maxx smartphones can enjoy Jelly Bean as a Christmas present and lay off their demands for a newer update until a month at least when Android 4.2 starts becoming streamlined. These updates are OTA of course and should you not receive a notification pop up by now, make sure you manually search for the update by navigating to the About Phone page inside the Settings. Let’s hope other manufacturers like Sony, LG follow suit as there are plenty of Xperia and Optimus smartphones out there inching to experience Jelly Bean.
