1:04PM EST November 13. 2012 - It's new release day today for those of us old enough to remember that Tuesdays are the days record stores â€" those were stores that sold records, then cassettes, then CDs, then, well, nothing â€" put the week's new titles out for sale.

While today's slate of new arrivals includes some serious teen bait (there's a new One Direction album, plus the latest Twilight soundtrack), we've also got dueling releases from the two greatest rock 'n' roll bands in history: The Beatles, with a mammoth audiophile vinyl box set, and The Rolling Stones, who deliver a new 50-track best-of for their 50th anniversary. Plus some '90s throwbacks: Green Day, is back with its second of three new albums this year, and Soundgarden drops its first set in 16 years.

Me, I'm digging on this archival live album from Sonic Youth.

Anyway, let's check out some headlines:

  • Music's not the only thing coming out today: Call of Duty: Black Ops II, widely expected to be the year's No. 1 smash video game, went on sale at midnight, and retailers are expecting huge sales throughout the day. In fact, don't be surprised if some of your co-workers are taking today off â€" or calling in sick â€" to log some early hours on the new game.
  • The members of Icelandic band Sigur Rós will bring their uncanny ability to mimic those old National Geographic whale-sounds flexidiscs back to North America for a 15-date tour that gets underway in late March.
  • Fans who didn't really dig Prometheus might want to check out a leaked script that appears to be an early version of Ridley Scott's Alien prequel. Written by Jon Spaihts, the script for what was then called Alien: Engineers differs significantly from the final product in that it's got a lot more aliens, including those fan-favorite face-huggers. Yes, please.
  • Led Zeppelin will help promote next week's release of Celebration Day â€" the album and DVD of its 2007 reunion â€" with some good old-fashioned corporate synergy, thanks to a deal the band cut to jam a couple tracks (Kashmir, Since I've Been Loving You) into NBC's Revolution on Monday night. Because, hey, why let The Who get all the prime-time slots?
  • The estate of William Faulkner is suing Sony Picture Classics for copyright infringement, alleging Woody Allen misquoted the author's famous line, "The past is never dead. It's not even past," in Midnight in Paris.
  • Kurt Cobain's handwritten list of his Top 50 albums includes the Pixies, The Vaselines, Gang of Four, The Stooges ... and Public Enemy's It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back. Bring the noise, indeed.
  • This is, as advertised, the best a cappella version of the James Bond theme you'll hear all day.
  • On Sunday, The Simpsons had a little fun with Karl Rove's inability to accept reality on Election Night.
  • If you're a sucker for tricked-out movie collections and expanded editions, the folks who run the U.K.-based, music-themed SuperDeluxeEdition.com have just spun off a sister site for cinephiles: SuperDeluxeBluray, com, which promises a steady stream of news about Blu-ray special editions, reissues and box sets.
  • If you want to get a feel of what it's going to be like sitting through the end credits of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey next month, take a listen to Song of the Lonely Mountain, Crowded House frontman Neil Finn's soundtrack contribution.
  • There's a MacGyver movie in the works, and it's not a MacGruber sequel.
  • Recovered recluse Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel is touring some more in 2013.
  • And, finally, Newark Mayor Cory Booker is horning in on Jim Gaffigan's Hot Pockets territory.
