Topping tech headlines on Thursday, Twitter users may have found a surprise in their inboxes this week, when the micro-blogging site sent password reset emails to users amidst concern over hacked accounts.
But, not everyone contacted had any reason for alarm. The service admitted Thursday that it unintentionally reset the passwords of a larger volume of accounts than those who may have actually been compromised. Twitter apologized for any inconvenience or confusion, but did not reveal how many emails were sent out, or how many accounts were actually hacked.
Meanwhile, the Samsung vs. Apple smartphone popularity contest continued in the third quarter, but Samsung emerged the victor. According to stats from Strategy Analytics, Samsung shipped 18 million Galaxy S III smartphones in the third quarter, grabbing 11 percent of the total smartphone market. Apple wasn't too far behind, pulling in 16.2 million iPhone 4S shipments. But, many consumers were likely waiting for the iPhone 5 release, which happened at the tail-end of the third quarter.
In other news, virtual corkboard site Pinterest is rolling out the long-awaited secret board feature, allowing users to build up to three boards that will be kept private, perfect for keeping holiday gift ideas hidden. The option is gradually showing up on all Web users' Pinterest page, as well as in the mobile iPhone, iPad, and Android apps.
