4G LTE Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 Coming to Sprint Nov. 11 - PC Magazine

Galaxy Tab 2 1.01

Sprint on Thursday announced it will begin selling the 10.1-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, the carrier's first 4G LTE tablet, beginning Sunday, Nov. 11.

The phone will be available in Sprint retail stores and on the company's website for $549.99, plus tax and surcharges. The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 boasts Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and a 1.5-GHz dual-core processor.

The new tablet maximizes home entertainment, working as more than just a way to watch video, listen to music, and surf the Web; it includes the built-in IR Blaster, which allows owners to use the device as a universal smart remote. It also boasts on-device encryption and VPN access as well as a 7,000mAh battery, allowing business users to stay connected.

The Tab 2 carries a rear-facing, 3-megapixel camera and camcorder as well as a VGA camera on the front for Face Unlock and video chat. It can support up to 10 Wi-Fi-enabled devices simultaneously on one mobile hotspot. It will tap into Sprint's 4G network where available.

"Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 brings Sprint 4G LTE to a new category of device and expands a portfolio already recognized as one of the industry's best," David Owens, vice president of product development for Sprint, said in a statement. "This new tablet combined with the Sprint 4G LTE network and our aggressively priced tablet rate plan options offer consumers and business users an exciting new way to stay connected and productive with a large workspace in an easily portable device."

The device can be activated with one of Sprint's new rate plans for 4G LTE enabled tablets, announced last week, which the carrier says will offer up to 20 percent more data than its rivals.

Sprint will offer four 4G LTE tablet plans with monthly recurring charges: 300MB will cost $14.99, 3GB will be $34.99, 6GB will be $49.99, and 12GB will cost $79.99. Subscribers can also opt for a one-month broadband pass at the same price if they don't want a recurring charge.

Existing Sprint smartphone customers who want to add a tablet to their account can choose between two special plans. The first provides 1GB of data for $15 per month, while the other offers 100MB for $10 per month.

With the release of the iPad mini and next-gen iPad tomorrow, meanwhile, Sprint becomes the third U.S. wireless carrier to offer the Apple tablet.
